AAMA Standardization Committe Approves Universal Card Link Standard for Debit Card Systems

Here’s the Ticket!

The newly formed AAMA Standardization Committee (headed by Adam Ambrosius of Bay Tek) has approved its first standard for amusement games.  (The AMOA/AAMA Industry Standardization Committee was dissolved several years ago much to my disappointment). The Universal Card Link describes a standard 9-pin connector that can be used to connect debit card system readers from all debit card system suppliers that comply with the standard.

What this could mean. The UCL protocol will make it easier for those involved in installing debit card readers in those games where linking problems existed.  Technicians would try different solutions and sometimes damage game parts or readers.  The UCL standard is a great step forward. I am hopeful that many more important standards will result from this committee.  As mentioned above, mobile payment standards is an area that will need to be addressed in the future.  And the sooner the better!
